Sleep Writing
This art installation attempts to bridge the boundaries between writing and drawing, language and gesture, sound and movement. The project sets out to record marks which were valued for their sound rather than their penmanship or graphic expression. The sounds gathered were influenced by the tools and surfaces involved, as well as the different environments in which they were recorded.
The objective was to listen to writing gestures and experiment with sound as a choreographic medium. No two people have the same writing sound-gesture: some lean heavily onto the page, others write in short swift movements. The exercise was informed by a “what if?” scenario of what it would be like if we valued the sound of writing. In other words, how would handwriting change if I made a mark or stroke according to the sound-shape?
